MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS –

Christopher Moore
Friday 12 October at 7:30pm
Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University

Classical meets contemporary when works by Mozart and Brahms are performed alongside Australian composer Iain Grandage’s exciting new work. Enjoy this intimate program curated and led by Principal Violist Christopher Moore, and featuring MSO Concertmaster Sophie Rowell.

“Arguably Mozart’s best concerto, Sinfonia Concertante has a bit of a twist for his most-loved instrument, the viola,” says Chris. “It is one of my all-time favourite pieces and I’m really excited to perform it with my dear friend Sophie Rowell.”

One of Brahms’ earliest efforts writing for orchestra was his Serenade No.2, a work that has received much acclaim since its premiere in 1860. But, as Chris notes, the work is much more than a simple precursor to his First Symphony. “To say that the Serenade No.2 was simply Brahms warming up to write a symphony is mere folly. This rarely-performed masterpiece is quintessential Brahms.”

Chris will perform on a Maggini viola, on loan to the MSO by an anonymous benefactor and crafted in 1610 (150 years before Mozart was born!). Join Chris, Sophie, and listen for the pure perfection of this incredible program featuring two of Australia’s foremost musicians.
