This seminar explores methodological fundamentals of string teaching. I will start with an outline what performance involves and what role intuition and analysis have in string playing and teaching. Careful understanding of the limits of analysis and the importance of allowing vivid intuition to lead us and the student have some strong methodological consequences. These extend to our view of so-called technique and its relationship to artistry, reach well into practice methods for students and inform all methodological aspects of our teaching and learning. A theoretical discussion will be followed by a practical teaching demonstration with a young violin student to show how learning responds in very different ways to the way we think.
