Klezmer Workshop

A pedagogy workshop led by:

Pip Thompson

For participants at AMEB Grade 5 level or above

Date & Time: Sunday, 7th August, 2pm – 4pm

Venue: Cook Community Hub Hall. Templeton St. Cook

In this workshop Pip Thompson will teach some of the fundamentals of Klezmer string style. Participants will learn the history of Klezmer music and its place in Eastern European Jewish society, and gain an understanding of the breadth of its influence. Pip will share stories of her own experience playing and researching Klezmer in Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

The workshop will encompass learning some Klezmer melodies, ornamentation styles and accompaniment roles. Pip will demonstrate an older, pre-World War II klezmer style quite different from that heard on many modern recordings. The workshop will culminate in the formation of a string ‘kapelye’ or Klezmer band where all participants can experiment with fulfilling the different roles of a Klezmer band.

As well as learning the basics of this intricate style, participation in the workshop will give an insight into teaching and learning Klezmer-influenced classical music by composers such as Bloch and Shostakovich.

This workshop is for musicians Grade 5 & above as the music is quite complex and is open to both students and adults.

Bring your instruments.
