Junior Melbourne String Ensemble (JMSE)

The JMSE is a new junior group which began in 2011. It is aimed at players in Year 4-7 at school (approx 9-12 years of age) with a minimum standard of Grade 3+ AMEB. It provides a unique opportunity for ensemble playing for string players who are advanced for their age. The music director for the JMSE is Julie Hewison, AMEB examiner, head of strings at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School and past president of the Victorian AUSTA association.

Intermediate Melbourne String Ensemble (IMSE)

Commencing at the beginning of 2014, Fintan Murphy will be directing the new intermediate MSE which will run from 2-3pm on Saturdays between the JMSE and the MSE. This group will develop ensemble skills and the technical skills necessary for advanced ensemble playing. Aimed at players around Gr 7 AMEB or equivalent (violin/viola) or around Gr 5 AMEB or equivalent (cello).

The orchestra involves players of all ages with various levels of ability. Many of our members study or teach music, but equally, many members play their instruments purely as a hobby. Mosman Symphony Orchestra is a friendly community orchestra and we are always keen to welcome new players. People join the orchestra for many reasons. Some of our members are music teachers, some are music students who take the opportunity to learn the standard orchestral repertoire in a friendly, non threatening environment. Many are simply amateur players who love playing orchestral music. There are no auditions, but to be comfortable with the repertoire string players should be at a level equivalent to AMEB Grade 5 or above.
