Session2.2: Using technology in string education
Session: This presentation will focus on what and how to use technology in string education. The use of technology in string teaching can enhance the enjoyment of learning, improve the quality and effectiveness of learning, increase the frequency of practice, reach students who are not able to have regular face-to-face lessons, and monitor student progress. It can help prepare performances and exams, save travel time and help students to continue their learning during restrictions and holidays. Teachers and students can be in touch more regularly through videos, blogs, posts, etc. Examples of the use of technology include:
- Online live lessons
- YouTube video demonstrations
- Video message lessons
- Pre-recorded video lesson online courses
- Creation of video ensemble performances (apps include Acapella, Virtual Choir, software Final Cut Pro)
- Virtual live concerts (live streamed or pre-recorded)
- Teaching students online across the country and the world
- Arranging / simplifying sheet music
Rodney Wikstrom (MTeach, BMus, AMusA , COGE, MMTA), is an Australian violin & viola performer and teacher based in Newcastle, NSW Australia. He began learning violin at age 3 with the Suzuki method. Rodney gained a music scholarship to Kinross Wolaroi School and later attended the Sydney Conservatorium High School. In 1997 he was awarded the AMusA and in 2002 graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music in violin performance. He enjoyed playing and touring with the SBS Television & Radio Youth Orchestra, SYO, Youth Music Australia Orchestras and the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra. In 2004, Rodney graduated with a Master of Teaching from Sydney University.
Rodney has performed and toured nationally and internationally with the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Victor Valdes Mariachi Band, Jimmy Barnes and Katie Noonan. He currently performs with Christ Church Camerata Orchestra, Sydney Ensemble, and The Victor Valdes Mariachi band. Rodney is a string tutor at Newcastle Grammar School and a conductor with Newcastle Youth Orchestras and the Newcastle Conservatorium Community Strings Program.
