Belinda McFarlane string educator with the London Symphony Orchestra shares her ideas and teaching methods.
Come along and be amazed at what can be achieved with her methods.
Belinda graduated from the Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide University with First Class Honours. As Leader of the Australian Youth Orchestra she toured Europe, culminating in a BBC Proms concert – she liked it so much she stayed! Continuing her studies in London with Emanuel Hurwitz and Carmel Kaine, Belinda went on to become a member of the London Symphony Orchestra. As well as a member of the violin section she is a dedicated member of the LSO’s Discovery team, involved with creative music making, workshops, coaching, mentoring and teaching – most significantly as lead mentor and tutor for the Take A Bow programme, training string players of all abilities to perform onstage with the LSO in London and Paris, and the LSO’s On Track programme which involved training an orchestra of East London school children to perform alongside the LSO at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. More recently she has been involved with the creation of the LSO’s East London Academy – a programme aimed at fostering a connection with, and creating opportunities for young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds in music higher education and the profession. She also sits on the orchestra’s Education Liaison Committee.

Stage-fright is a big issue for some people, and a significant issue for many. If you do get really nervous to the extent that you can’t express yourself or share and enjoy what you really love about music in your performances, this session will enable you to begin to heal your fears around performing, and regain your original inspiration for taking up music in the first place. You will learn practical on-the-spot approaches which will change your whole experience of playing in public, and dissolve the old patterns which caused you to feel anxiety instead of joy. Includes specific take-home techniques and practical tools for on-stage use in even the most demanding performances.
Open to all levels and all instruments including voice, percussion, piano, strings, brass, woodwind etc.
Rupert Guenther has taught his approaches to healing stage-fright in hundreds of workshops and masterclasses for students of all ages in universities, schools and holiday music camps throughout Australia, the UK, Italy, and Austria for over 15 years, including masterclasses at Vienna University for The Performing Arts (Austria), the St Paul Summer Academy (Austria), and Vorarlberg State Conservatorium (Austria). He has presented at The European String Teachers Association (ESTA) international conferences, AUSTA National Conference, The Reflective Conservatoire (The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London), as well as private sessions for some of the world’s top soloists, chamber ensembles, and key players from opera and symphony orchestras in Europe. He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance in classical violin with Brian Finlayson at The Victorian College of The Arts, 3 years of studies in Vienna (Austria) with the renowned Professor Helfried Fister, and Masterclasses with Professor Igor Ozim throughout Australia and Europe. He has toured and given recitals and live radio broadcasts worldwide for over 20 years, and has released over 28 CDs since 2003 including five CDs commissioned and recorded for Radio ABC Classic FM in Australia. His concerts and recitals include Melbourne International Festival (Australia), The Guildhall Festival (London), London Docklands Museum (UK), Tate Britain London (UK) and further recitals in Italy and Austria.

Klezmer Workshop
A pedagogy workshop led by:
Pip Thompson
For participants at AMEB Grade 5 level or above
Date & Time: Sunday, 7th August, 2pm – 4pm
Venue: Cook Community Hub Hall. Templeton St. Cook
In this workshop Pip Thompson will teach some of the fundamentals of Klezmer string style. Participants will learn the history of Klezmer music and its place in Eastern European Jewish society, and gain an understanding of the breadth of its influence. Pip will share stories of her own experience playing and researching Klezmer in Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
The workshop will encompass learning some Klezmer melodies, ornamentation styles and accompaniment roles. Pip will demonstrate an older, pre-World War II klezmer style quite different from that heard on many modern recordings. The workshop will culminate in the formation of a string ‘kapelye’ or Klezmer band where all participants can experiment with fulfilling the different roles of a Klezmer band.
As well as learning the basics of this intricate style, participation in the workshop will give an insight into teaching and learning Klezmer-influenced classical music by composers such as Bloch and Shostakovich.
This workshop is for musicians Grade 5 & above as the music is quite complex and is open to both students and adults.
Bring your instruments.

Early Music for Teachers
Over the last few centuries, the norms and aesthetics of Art, Architecture, Society, and Language have changed quite significantly. It would be considered strange to view and literally interpret the works of the past with the expectations of the present with little consideration for the time and place in which they were created. The same is true for Music.
The beginnings of Historically Informed Performance Practice in the 20th century were dominated by the rediscovery of contemporary manuscripts and treatises that cast new light on the interpretation of blobs on a page. The replacement of “traditional modern” ways of interpretation meant that new norms had to be established. Unfortunately, this has led to the perception that Early Music is a strict rules-based method of interpretation and that the contemporary treatises are the end-point of Performance Practice.
Another approach to Early Music suggests that ideas and concepts learnt from treatises and manuscripts are only the beginning of a journey. They serve to inform our basic musical intuition; a home base of academic knowledge to inform our understanding of music. From a solid foundation of historical understanding, we are then free to explore individual expression within this new framework.
In this workshop, John introduces the idea that Baroque and Classical Music are as expressive as later forms of music when viewed through the lens of Early Music. The idea that much of the interpretative treatises only attempt to codify intuitive patterns of human experience, emotions, and patterns of interaction.
This will be followed by a practical workshop on three AMEB Baroque pieces which we will explore and interpret through an Early Music lens. Suitable for all stringed instruments. Please bring your instrument and a music stand.
John Ma
John Ma is a Violinist/Violist and Viola d’amore player specialising in Early Music. He has performed in various roles with groups around the world including Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (NL), Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (UK), Academia Montis Regalis (IT), Bach Collegium Japan (JP), Musica Poetica (NL), Apollo Ensemble (NL), Fantasticus (NL), New Collegium (NL), Collegium 1704 (CZ), Helsinki Baroque Orchestra (FIN), B’Rock (BG), Trondheim Baroque Orchestra (NOR).
In Australia, John has appeared with groups such as Pinchgut Opera, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Haydn Ensemble, Australian Bach Akademie, Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Salut!, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and Sinfonia Australis.
As a teacher and ensemble leader, he is keen to seek a balance between technique and exploration. A robust technique is meaningless if it does not form the basis for a playful exploration and communication with colleagues and audience.
John is an avid gamer, comic book reader, and tech-nerd. He retains an interest in scientific and mathematical developments and tries to stay up to date with the latest news and advances related to his previous studies. He is now based in Canberra where he has decades of learning the finer points of gardening and vegetable growing ahead of him.

Mapping out a fingerboard is lifelong fun for cellists, including the travel between positions.
This workshop will be a forum where we discuss how to approach shifting from the earliest years of learning, right up what we do as professionals. We will look at how a good knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of shifting give us certainty and style, and how we provide a left hand base for the bow to operate on in an unencumbered way. What artistic and historical considerations do we consider to help us make choices about the mechanism and style we decide to use? What are all the mechanisms we use at different musical points? How do we organise the bow in relation to shifts?
What have anticipation, ground force, momentum and gravity to do with it? How do our bodies work? How does an understanding of anatomy help the specifics of shifting?
Megan Taylor
Megan Taylor was educated at the NSW Conservatorium of Music High School. beginning cello studies with John Painter.
After spending 1O years in London studying with Raphael Wallfisch and Stefan Popov, and working in a freelance capacity with many ensembles, Megan moved to Copenhagen to study with the European Suzuki Group, beginning a lifelong passion for learning about teaching. After returning to Sydney Megan worked with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and many touring groups such as the Royal Ballet and The Bolshoi Ballet orchestras. She undertook her Teacher Training for Alexander Technique in Sydney and began teaching Alexander Technique in Sydney including training other teachers at the Centre for Alexander Technique Studies. She taught cello at many schools in Sydney and ran many large workshops for cellists and study workshops for teachers with her colleague Pip Jackson (Philippa Harding).
Megan then moved to Canberra to undertake a B Mus (Perf) with Lois Simpson, graduating in 1994. She has been teaching both cello and Alexander in Canberra since then.
Megan has been a cello tutor at Youth Orchestras in Europe, Sydney and Canberra. She considers cello classes or tutorials essential for learning and developing the young cellist, given the highly specialised nature of the fingering system, patterns idiosyncratic for different composers, and the traditions and learning passed down through generations. That is the best fun!
