This Masterclass is suitable for senior string students, AMEB Grade 5 and above and all string teachers.
This Masterclass is a wonderful opportunity for senior string students and teachers to experience the wealth of expertise John Ma brings to interpreting Baroque repertoire. Working with selected individual students, John will guide their understanding and interpretation of some of the standard repertoire, often presented in exams and performances at this level.
John Ma
John Ma is a Violinist/Violist and Viola d’amore player specialising in Early Music. He has performed in various roles with groups around the world including Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (NL), Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (UK), Academia Montis Regalis (IT), Bach Collegium Japan (JP), Musica Poetica (NL), Apollo Ensemble (NL), Fantasticus (NL), New Collegium (NL), Collegium 1704 (CZ), Helsinki Baroque Orchestra (FIN), B’Rock (BG), Trondheim Baroque Orchestra (NOR).
In Australia, John has appeared with groups such as Pinchgut Opera, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Haydn Ensemble, Australian Bach Akademie, Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Salut!, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and Sinfonia Australis.
As a teacher and ensemble leader, he is keen to seek a balance between technique and exploration. A robust technique is meaningless if it does not form the basis for a playful exploration and communication with colleagues and audience.
John is an avid gamer, comic book reader, and tech-nerd. He retains an interest in scientific and mathematical developments and tries to stay up to date with the latest news and advances related to his previous studies. He is now based in Canberra where he has decades of learning the finer points of gardening and vegetable growing ahead of him.

AUSTA Members are invited to attend the Southeast Asia Music Academy (SEA Music Academy) Conference from 22nd June 2023 – 23 June 2023
The journey of the past few years has been one of adaptation and repair – and perhaps now we can take this resilience and the new skills garnered in reimagining boundaries of our art, our craft, and our industry. The Musicverse Conference of 2023 carries us into territories both familiar and uncharted, from music education to leading the world’s greatest musical team.
In approaching the Academy’s third anniversary, we also remind ourselves of the importance of community, bringing to you a talk on the Alexander Technique approach to practicing and performing, and an international leader in music therapy, as well as in building spaces for new conversations.
Reimagining Boundaries, Building Community: as we blaze trails anew, we do so hand in hand.

Event Details
Paul McDermott Violin Scholarship 2023 – Sunday 18 June
Today young Victorian violinists are invited annually to apply for the scholarship that bears Paul McDermott’s name but few know the story behind the man and the scholarship.
The scholarship was created in 1980 by an anonymous local music lover and benefactor. Paul McDermott was chosen as the dedicatee for the scholarship as he was a much loved local violinist and conductor. He served as the chief conductor of the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra from 1960 – 1973 and was founder and president of the Australian Musicians’ Guild.
The guild was established in 1971 and gave regular concerts including Music in the Round which became a fixture in the musical life of Melbourne from 1972 to 1985. It involved a whole weekend of music at an historic venue such as Werribee Mansion or the Abbotsford Convent. This also became the perfect event to showcase the talents of the annual recipient of the Paul McDermott scholarship where they had the chance to play alongside professional Australian chamber musicians and international guests.
The Music in the Round concerts unfortunately came to an end when Paul McDermott died in 1985. Until that year he had continued to work tirelessly as both artistic director and a busy performer. The Australian Musicians’ Guild also folded in 1996 at which time the running of the scholarship was entrusted to AUSTA.
In recent years there have been two resurrections of Music in the Round, one by oboist Jeff Crellin at Monash University, and another for the 10 year anniversary of the Abbotsford Convent Foundation in 2014 directed by Chris Howlett. The legacy lives on with a prestigious award to add to any young violinist’s biography, a prize of $1500 to aid further study, and a public performance at an AUSTA event. Violinists that reside in Victoria and are younger than 15 years on July 1st 2021 are invited to apply for this year’s scholarship.

AUSTA VIC is excited to announce an upcoming Pedagogy Day for string players and teachers. See below for details on session presenters, topics and a schedule of the day. These include an afternoon focus on Historically Informed Practices (HIP) and a Q and A session with Peter Fabian (viola). The event will be hosted in Kew at Genazzano FCJ College,
301 Cotham Road.
String departments and music schools are encouraged to share this event with their networks, particularly string teachers in the early years of their practice. Personally, I attended a similar event in 2017 one year after graduating from Uni. It was an accident that I attended, but boy am I glad I did as it introduced me to the world of professional development, learning from colleagues, networking and being inspired by all the different facets of our String community.
Keep an eye on the AUSTA VIC social media pages, as we will be posting the bios of all presenters in the coming months, as well as further information about the day.
AUSTA VIC looks forward to seeing you at this event.

TECHNOLOGY for Musicianship and Creativity
ONLINE EVENT
SUNDAY AUG 27 2pm WA, 4pm AEST (and available later as a recording)
Do all the new music apps available make your head spin?
Have you wanted to incorporate some technology to your studio teaching but don’t know where to start?
This workshop will help you unleash the full potential of simple metronome apps, through beat makers/drum machines, and, finally, full looper pedals in your instrumental lessons.
These tools can help beginners find fun ways to internalize pulse, developing students keep interest in all those boring, repetitive scales and exercises, and advancing players to explore improvisation and composition.
Get ready to explore new dimensions in your students’ potential as we delve into ways to integrate these powerful apps and devices into your teaching toolbox.
AUSTA WA is honoured to present experienced WA violinist and teacher Ruth Klein Cook in this exciting online event, which will also be available later as a recording for all who register.
Link to book: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1098299
American violinist Ruth Klein Cook is a charismatic and captivating presence on today’s music scene. Classically trained, she comfortably embraces various genres of music from jazz to pop to folk. Seamlessly moving between musical genres and ensembles, you can find Ruth playing solo, leading the sFOURsando Chamber Ensemble, or as a member of the Perth Symphony Orchestra, Fremantle Chamber Orchestra, and Australian Baroque.
As founding member of the Whitestone Duo, Ruth received a Chamber Music America Rural Residency Grant to live and teach in rural Kansas. The violin/viola duo expanded into the Red River String Quartet, moved to Oklahoma and became the inaugural graduate quartet-in-residence partnering the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist University. Ruth performed in orchestras across the US before moving to Australia in 2011.
Committed to mentoring young players so they may find their own, unique voice, Ruth tutors privately and at the Hale School, coaches chamber music with the WA Chamber Music Program (WAYACHAMP), and is a sought after festival adjudicator. She strongly believes that the young people today need to have opportunities in all genres of music. Ruth has served on the AUSTA WA Committee and is the immediate Past President of AUSTA WA.

Sunday 17 September
9.00-10.30 | Welcome & Presentation: Practising with Intent / The Musician as a Storyteller with Rachael Beesley Learning outcomes: Build your confidence, curiosity and freedom to explore practising in an improvisatory manner with intent. Explore new and exciting approaches to repertoire and technique, increase your sense of well-being and find keys to experiencing the FLOW state. In exploring these concepts, we also get closer to the cognitive psychology of today. By trying out postures and movements ourselves, we learn to feel what a gesture can cause in our own body. In the process we also learn to decipher the acting styles and paintings of the past. All of these disciplines follow the same rhetorical logic: art must convince viewers and audiences by causing a physical reaction and thus touching their hearts. That is, after all, the intention of music. |
10.30-11.00 | Break |
11.00-12.30 | Demonstrations: Historical String Instruments (+Clarinet) Learning outcomes: Deepen your awareness of new and interesting HIP approaches to repertoire, string instruments and expressive techniques. |

The recording will be available to watch: Monday 6th November – Monday 13th November 2023.

Webinar details:
Mapping out a fingerboard is lifelong fun for cellists, including the travel between positions.
This workshop will be a forum where we discuss how to approach shifting from the earliest years of learning, right up what we do as professionals. We will look at how a good knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of shifting give us certainty and style, and how we provide a left hand base for the bow to operate on in an unencumbered way. What artistic and historical considerations do we consider to help us make choices about the mechanism and style we decide to use? What are all the mechanisms we use at different musical points? How do we organise the bow in relation to shifts?
What have anticipation, ground force, momentum and gravity to do with it? How do our bodies work? How does an understanding of anatomy help the specifics of shifting?
Megan Taylor
Megan Taylor was educated at the NSW Conservatorium of Music High School. beginning cello studies with John Painter.
After spending 1O years in London studying with Raphael Wallfisch and Stefan Popov, and working in a freelance capacity with many ensembles, Megan moved to Copenhagen to study with the European Suzuki Group, beginning a lifelong passion for learning about teaching. After returning to Sydney Megan worked with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and many touring groups such as the Royal Ballet and The Bolshoi Ballet orchestras. She undertook her Teacher Training for Alexander Technique in Sydney and began teaching Alexander Technique in Sydney including training other teachers at the Centre for Alexander Technique Studies. She taught cello at many schools in Sydney and ran many large workshops for cellists and study workshops for teachers with her colleague Pip Jackson (Philippa Harding).
Megan then moved to Canberra to undertake a B Mus (Perf) with Lois Simpson, graduating in 1994. She has been teaching both cello and Alexander in Canberra since then.
Megan has been a cello tutor at Youth Orchestras in Europe, Sydney and Canberra. She considers cello classes or tutorials essential for learning and developing the young cellist, given the highly specialised nature of the fingering system, patterns idiosyncratic for different composers, and the traditions and learning passed down through generations. That is the best fun!

Saturday 4th November, 2:00 – 3:30pm: Motivation and Practice….. really… do I have to?
This workshop explores an interactive dialogue about a mysterious topic: individual practice! Why do we do it? Is it necessary? Why do teachers insist on it? Could we enjoy it? Is it effective and if so why and how?Pedagogy insists that it is a game changer- Carl Flesch famously says that 80% of students’ challenges would be met if students only practiced properly. Fritz Kreisler thinks practice can be dangerous and too much can be bad for you. Students find it hard to figure it out consistently. So, what needs to go on in practice to make it work? Goetz will explore this topic as comprehensively as possible in dialogue with students and teachers. Students: please bring instruments and prepare some music (half a page) of something that you find boring or impossible…. I want us to end up with something very useful and immediately productive in response. No one will leave without ideas for improvement … money back guarantee…
Saturday 4th November, 3:45 – 5:15pm: Developing Technique Efficiently
So, what then is Technique? We are supposed to have a good one. But when we invoke “technique” it does rather sound like we are supposed to be robots that produce stuff quickly and efficiently, flamboyantly and successfully. What is the point of that when music is human and all about feeling?
In this workshop I want to introduce a concept of technique as condition and fitness (rather like sports…) and suggest that our aim is to play (not produce). If technique, actually, is our fitness to play we might need to learn it in a quite specific way, think about it with particular awareness (as condition, rather than tool) and consider in turn more carefully why playing is disrupted and our (analytic) consciousness might interfere when we think of ourselves as producing performance. (PS. For those wondering whether this is rather abstract… there will be plenty of examples of useful and quick exercises for players to wake up and get attention flying…for all instruments, including erhu and ukele…)

AUSTA ACT Pedagogy Day
Passionate about string teaching? Join us for the AUSTA ACT String Pedagogy Day.
Meet other string teachers in our region and make lifelong supportive connections and partnerships.
We will begin with a forum comparing the differences and particular needs of upper and lower strings: particularly useful if you conduct young players in string orchestras.
After a short break we will split up into upper and lower strings to explore ideas and approaches to skill building, and troubleshoot difficulties we all experience. Join us for an inspiring and informative afternoon!
