South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
The South Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (SMSO) is one of Melbourne’s oldest community orchestras, founded in 1946 and with a long-standing association with the South Melbourne Town Hall. An amateur, member-managed orchestra, SMSO presents four concerts each year and rehearses weekly, welcoming committed players without formal auditions. The orchestra performs a wide-ranging repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary works and regularly collaborates with accomplished soloists from across Australia’s professional and tertiary music sectors. Led by conductor Lynette Bridgland, SMSO continues to play an important role in Melbourne’s community music life and is proudly supported by the City of Port Phillip.
