Melbourne String Ensembles

Melbourne String Ensembles (MSE) is a dynamic 3-tier string orchestra development program, offering exciting performance and touring opportunities for players aged 7-18. Renowned teachers, small group sizes and a nurturing community make MSE a unique experience.
The MSE Ensembles Program accepts enrolments throughout the year. Rehearsals are scheduled on Saturdays afternoons during school term in Kew. Please enquire to the email addresses listed for each ensemble below to arrange an audition.

The Melbourne String Ensemble (MSE)
Directed by Fintan Murphy, MSE offers students an unparalleled opportunity to perform high quality repertoire with some of Melbourne’s most talented young string musicians. The students develop ensemble, chamber and advanced musicianship skills and regularly take part in masterclasses with some of Australia’s most accomplished professional musicians.
Every 2-3 years MSE tours internationally. The next MSE tour is programmed for March-April 2024 (Germany).
MSE rehearse from 2:30pm-5pm on Saturdays.
The expected entry standard is:
Violin: AMEB Grade 8 plus
Cello/Viola : AMEB Grade 7 plus

Intermediate Melbourne String Ensemble (IMSE)
IMSE, currently directed by Michael Loftus-Hills, began in 2014. Students in IMSE develop ensemble skills and the technical mastery necessary for advanced ensemble participation. To develop their musical teamwork, the IMSE performs unconducted.
IMSE rehearse from 1pm-3pm on Saturdays.
The expected entry standard is:
Violin: AMEB Grade 7 plus
Cello/Viola: AMEB Grade 5 plus

Junior Melbourne String Ensemble (JMSE)
JMSE is directed by Margaret Butcher and welcomes players from approx 7-12 years of age.
JMSE provides a warm and nurturing environment for our youngest members and focuses on developing their ensemble and performance skills. Students develop a love of orchestral playing as they rehearse and perform an eclectic range of repertoire.
JMSE rehearse from 1pm-2pm on Saturdays
The expected entry standard is:
Violin: AMEB grade 3 plus
Celllo/viola: AMEB grade 2 plus
