$25 per performance piece. Family discounts: $15 for each additional child.

Late entries may not be guaranteed a place.
Your performance time will be emailed to you (and will be on display on the website) by 23rd April.
Please note that works performed must be no longer than 6 minutes.

This is a free service.
If you would like to use the festival accompanist, it is vitally important that you send a copy of the piano part with your payment.

"Tricks in the Trade for Starting Beginners" (A String Pedagogy Enrichment Course)

ATTENTION ALL VIOLIN-VIOLA TEACHERS AND PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS
This is a chance to gain some new ideas and share your knowledge with others. Teaching is a serious craft. The responsibilities to those under your tutelage are great and not to be taken lightly. We, as teachers, all need to refresh our skills, energy, and motivation. Workshops like this provide the opportunity to do so. The last time this workshop was offered was in 2007.

The course is sequencetally structured. Missing sessions is not recommended.
The most important stage of learning is the beginning stage. If a child is not “set up” properly or motivated correctly, future failure is automatically built in. How can we go beyond this and into the “intermediate stages” of learning? And yet, this early stage of teaching is rarely discussed.
If you think that anyone can start a student, I suggest you look at your results and perhaps re-think it all. I challenge anyone who tells me that it is an easy thing to do. Are the young students prepared well enough to go beyond playing “Twinkle, Little Star”? Have their techniques been developed solidly enough for their advancement? Teachers need to ask themselves why the students often do not go beyond a certain level. Why do they quit? It is us or them? This workshop will be geared to give teachers inspiration, motivation, new ideas, and techniques with which to guide their students into success. It is hoped that many teachers will come and share their knowledge with each other and gain new insights. Teaching techniques are forever changing and growing. The one constant thing in the life of a teacher, is that music study should bring great joy to all involved. I hope you will come and share with us your expertise, experiences, and join with us the adventure of teaching in those important early stages.
About Judy Vasek:
Judy Vasek, born in Chicago, holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University and a Master of Music Education (strings specialist) from Indiana University. In more than thirty-five years of teaching experience, she has taught successfully at all levels from preschool to tertiary. She was a member of the string faculty at the University of Kentucky and Indiana University South Bend. She has taught orchestral techniques, coached chamber music ensembles, conducted youth orchestras, given teacher training seminars, taught string technique and pedagogy courses, and organised and directed string workshops in the USA and Australia.
Judy became seriously involved with the Suzuki method in 1971, and became a Certified Teacher Trainer with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Her major performance instrument is the double bass. She has free-lanced with many orchestras in the USA and was Principal Bassist with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, Kentucky, for eighteen years. Though primarily a bass performer, she has studied violin technique and teaching extensively, and she became the only person for whom the violin was a secondary instrument to have been awarded a Teaching Assistantship in Violin at Indiana University. She also studied violin teaching with the famous Dorothy DeLay of the Julliard School of Music.
When she moved to Perth in 1994, Judy established the Vasek School for Violin and Strings (VSVS), broadly based on the Suzuki philosophy with its emphasis on the nurturing of the parent-child bond. VSVS is open to children of all backgrounds, and Judy Vasek has an absolute commitment to achieving the maximum potential of each child.
Her most important venture in WA is to establishment of the VASEK YOUNG STRING PLAYERS’ FOUNDATION. This Charitable, Not for Profit, Tax-deductible foundation was founded to give financial aid to all string players under the age of 25 who are deserving young talents, to promote string education, showcase our young people with concerts, to promote further professional development for our existing teachers, and educate the community as to the importance of music in people’s lives

BOWING FUNDAMENTALS for TECHNIQUE, EXPRESSION & TONE - WORKSHOP/DEMONSTRATIONS (VIOLIN/VIOLA)

5 x 1½hr professional development workshops dedicated to the fundamentals of bowing technique as essential tools for musical expression & tone.
Each workshop teaches the fundamentals of the requisite violin/viola bowings (detaché, martelé, legato, spiccato, collé, up-bow and down-bow staccato, ricochet) and the “how-to” of the actual steps for performing and teaching all the different bowing strokes. Includes all the preparatory steps and exercises for each bowing to be successful in a clear step by-step approach as developed by violin pedagogue Igor Ozim, making it easy to understand and use.
Ideal for performers, teachers and advanced students alike.
Rupert Guenther is a soloist, chamber musician, composer and author. He performs at festivals and teaches masterclasses worldwide including Vienna University and the European String Teachers Association (ESTA). He studied in the violin method of Igor Ozim with Helfried Fister in Austria and held principal positions in orchestras in Europe including the Vienna Chamber Opera.

Each week specific skills are covered including innovative exercises in tone production, intonation, ensemble listening & playing, improvisation, practical music history, theory, repertoire, left & right hand technique
