Notice from Arthur Robinson Due to advancing osteoarthritis I am sellin my violin making and repair workshop.
This consists of:
All tools, moulds, patterns, plans, extensive library and wood stock (most of which is 30 yrs old).
Copies of my notebooks on manufacturing, individual instruments, varnish making, etc. will also be included.
Some of my tools are also of historic interest having been used by former well known Australian makers. Some are old and of extremely fine metal.
Although I have helped some on the road to making, I would be happy to teach whoever takes this on, if feasible.
It should be noted that my musical instrument making work has not been limited to the violin family but also includes harp, viola da gamba, guitars - of all sorts, rebec, violone and Baroque versions of the violin, viola and cello.
I would like to dispose of this as a complete entity and am not considering anything piecemeal at this stage.
I do not want to find myself doing less fine work as the condition worsens and would prefer to pass on my instrument making chattels and knowledge whilst I can.
Any interested party should contact me by email: arthurob@iinet.net.au read more |

Book Launch Daniel KOSSOV
Pictures of an Outstanding Musician Part 2
“A Violin from Jerusalem”
by Rosemary Ellen Tingley
Saturday 4th May 2013 at 4.00pm
Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre
Leach Highway, between Riseley St & Murdoch Drive
◆ Food! ◆ Champagne! ◆ Books @ special price! ◆ Music!
Daniel Kossov – violin
Tingley Turner duo – ’cello and guitar
“Tales of genius and the human and societal reaction to it are prominently and effectively explored. And tales of
the effect of music and dance on the human psyche are organically woven into all of these.”
Joseph Yurt - author, Kentucky USA
Is there something beyond faith, beyond religion, something we don’t see because we are so busy with
our lives, having and getting things that maybe we don’t even need?
And is it given to only a few gifted souls in our lifetime who through their Art bring us face to face with
a Simplicity which we find difficult to comprehend?
Rather than delve into this enigma seeking answers, Daniel Kossov: Pictures of an Outstanding Musician
Part 2 “A Violin from Jerusalem” challenges the reader to put aside preconceived notions, to look at
the ‘pictures’ in the life of this extraordinary person and seeing things as they are, draw their own
conclusions.

Chamber Jam Chamber Jam is back for its 5th year at the fabulous Ellington Jazz Club, Perth’s best live music venue. They have an amazing year ahead with 10 shows featuring nearly every instrument possible and the 1st kicks off tonight, Featuring…
Breanna Evangelista
Breanna Evangelista recently moved back to Perth after finishing her music studies in Hobart which she began at WAAPA in Perth. She is a talented trumpet player and is rapidly gaining the respect of many more senior musicians in Perth. Most notably, she has been appointed as Principal Trumpet with the Perth Symphony Orchestra for their major summer concerts in 2013: The City of Joondalup’s Valentines Day Concert, and Symphony by the Lake, the PSO’s Summer Proms concert on Saturday 9th March. She comes to Chamber Jam for the first time to perform solo with perhaps just one or two special guests.
ISQ
ISQ is the ‘contemporary’ version of the Imperial String Quartet. The quartet, comprising some of Perth’s leading string players, all of whom play in the new Perth Symphony Orchestra, come together to use the string quartet line-up to play music they love, regardless of genre. This year the quartet is led by Erin Chen (Principal 2nd Violin with the Perth Symphony) and featuring Anna Sarcich on cello, Stephanie Dean on 2nd violin and Bourby Webster on viola. We will be playing our usual mix of classical and contemporary but also including two wonderful pieces: Romance from Borodin String Quartet No. 2 and the slow movement from Tchaikovsky String Quartet No. 1 both of which we performed recently at the wedding of cellist Emma McCoy who often performs with ISQ and is now enjoying a four-month honeymoon to New York.
Four on Six

Australian violinist Gillian Catlow and Luxembourg-born Dutch guitarist Charles Hoernemann began their musical partnership as Four on Six in 2010.
Their diverse and ever-expanding repertoire includes Gypsy Jazz, Brazilian Choro, Tango, Bossa Nova, Samba, Waltz Musette, compositions from Scandinavia, Beatles and tunes from the Great American Songbook. In short, if they love it, they play it!

Creative Improvisation for Electric Violin, Cello, Viola & Bass This Saturday 23rd February - FREE!
This Saturday 23rd February at 1:30pm there will be a free demo class focusing on electric violin and creative improvisation: making your own music, jamming with your friends, and discovering you can paint with music/sound, just like you can with colours on a blank canvas. Rupert Guenther will cover the how why & what etc at this free first session as well as playing a lot of music so you can hear and feel what it's like (there will be an opportunity for some participation too). The actual classes will start the following week.
It is about developing our creative & intuitive flow as well as good, structured skills. As always, developing our personal/artistic/spiritual maturity and self-esteem will be at the heart if it all.
You would need to get an electric violin (or cello or whatever you play) and small amp sometime in the coming weeks. Let Guenther know if you or your teenagers want to get involved and he will help you with getting a good quality instrument & amp. Classes will run Saturdays 1:30-3:00pm at the studio in Neerabup and cost $25 per session payable as 5 sessions in advance.
Tell your friends and bring family along to the demo this Saturday.
Check out the details and how to book at http://www.schoolofcreativearts.net/

EUROPE’S TOP KLEZMER GROUP TO TOUR AUSTRALIA The London Klezmer Quartet 2013 Australia Tour: 28 Feb – 1 April 2013
The London Klezmer Quartet (LKQ) return to Australia for a five-week national tour of the festival circuit and major venues from 28 February. And they have a hot new album with them!
In “stylish performances from four highly accomplished and in-demand musicians’” (Folk Roots Magazine) this all-female band will take Australian concert and festival audiences on a Jewish musical odyssey from Eastern Europe to Australia via the Balkans, Thailand, Turkey, the US and London.
Klezmer is the traditional celebratory and soulful music of Jewish Eastern Europe. From kley zemer (Hebrew: vessels of song) – music that kept Yiddish wedding parties on their feet for days!
Ilana Cravitz (fiddle), Susi Evans (clarinet), Carol Isaacs (accordion), and Indra Buraczewska (double bass) bring world music fans and fine music lovers the whirling, irresistible energy of Klezmer. You will want to laugh, to cry, and most of all… to dance! Their authentic sound has won praise from leading international exponents of this tradition, including Stuart Brotman of Brave Old World and Frank London of the Klezmatics.
The LKQ made a huge splash with their 2012 debut tour of the east coast of Australia, playing to sold out audiences. Following the enthusiastic reception the band received from very diverse audiences, they are back by popular demand just 12 months later with their newest CD, entitled “Butterfield Green N16” – full of traditional-style original material inspired by their travels and their London stomping ground. Track titles include ‘Chalk Farm Sirba’ and ‘Butterfield Green Kolomeyke’.
These innovators and leaders of the international klezmer scene will play up a storm at no less than 6 festivals including Port Fairy Folk Festival, the National Folk Festival, the Blue Mountains Music Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, Nannup Music Festival and Castlemaine State Festival, plus a wide spectrum of venues, including the Melbourne Recital Centre, Camelot, the Famous Spiegeltent, and Sydney Jewish Museum.
At the forefront of the international klezmer dance revival, LKQ boast one of only two UK dance callers. Those strutting their stuff at special dance events will have the chance to learn how to hot-foot it Yiddish style. The band will also be passing on their technical skills and knowledge of this style of playing at their 100% participatory workshops at festivals – and through Sydney Conservatorium’s Open Academy.

Fintan Murphy workshop, Sister Camille Poidevin, new WA committee Happy New Year from your AUSTA WA Committee!
The October AGM went very well, and we were pleased to see amongst those gathered, several former Presidents, John Dean, Ibolya Mikajlo, Rennae van der Laan, Andrew Patrick along with our current President, Margaret Schlink. We welcomed two new members to the Committee, Verity Brockman and Anna Chomicka.
AUSTA WA is sad to note the recent passing of AUSTA WA member Sister Camille Poidevin OA. Sister Camille taught violin (and piano, organ and voice) in Derby for many years, and was involved in the formation of a symphony orchestra in the Derby Leprosarium (celebrated in the ABC documentary “The Bungarun Orchestra”). She made a unique contribution to music education in this State. Imagine driving 900kms with your students for exams and Eisteddfods!
We’re mailing fliers for our first event in February, which is aimed primarily at violin and viola teachers and students with particular focus on intermediate and senior levels. One session (Sunday at 2) is relevant to all teachers, and we ask you also to make other studio and ensemble teachers aware of this opportunity. AUSTA WA will be emailing separate application forms for student participation in some of the single sessions.
If you intend to come along, registering early is particularly helpful, and if you have ideas about a social event on Sunday evening or Monday evening, please email helenvla@bigpond.net.au

Dragon conducts Copland & Haydn 7.30pm-8.30pm Tuesday the 20th of November at the Government House Ballroom.
This intimate concert showcases two very exciting works:
Haydn – Symphony 45 “Farewell”
Imagine going to a concert hall to hear an orchestra, but the players get up and leave before the piece is over. Ridiculous? Well, that’s what happened with Haydn’s inventive “Farewell” Symphony, written in 1772.
Copland – Appalachian Spring
Aaron Copland was one of the earliest composers to put his finger on an American sound. This work was written for a small ballet by Martha Graham and illustrates a pioneer celeb pioneer celebration in spring around a newly built farmhouse in the Pennsylvania hills. In a score that is suffused with the natural melodic charm of folk music, there’s just one actual folk song—the Shaker song “Simple Gifts” which is used in a moment of true inspiration.

HIP: The Next Generation
After 60 years of the most recent movement in music scholarship and performance concerned with Historically Informed Performance (HIP), this talk explores where has such research brought us and where is it going? The continuing mission seems to be to seek out new sources, new information: 'to boldly go' where no HIP has gone before. In order to trace these achievements, an exploration of early sound recordings perhaps offers us some insights?

Come and have fun fiddling! The Junior Group of the Perth Scottish Fiddlers is looking for new players of primary school age (minimum level about grade one).
This is a great opportunity for young students to participate in a different experience of playing violin (‘fiddle’) together. Music is taught and learned by ear (music given to take home) giving a great experience of learning aurally. Fiddle music is fun to play, often fast and great for developing a good bowing arm. There is also a lot of classical music influence in Scottish music. Harmonies for tunes are also taught - more aural skills! If you have a cello playing friend they are welcome too.
The Perth Scottish Fiddlers was formed almost three years ago to give musicians who love fiddling music, in particular the varied and beautiful Scottish repertoire, an opportunity to play together. In that time they have played numerous times in the Irish Club, at Kulcha, WAPOL Scottish Day Out and this year at Fairbridge Folk Festival. The next concert is in August supporting wonderful (Australian) Scottish fiddler Catherine Fraser. Our previous juniors have ‘graduated’ to the main group, so we are looking for new members for our junior group.
The group meets on the last Sunday of each month at Warren lake Hall, Teakwood Avenue, Woodlands, and is directed by Margaret Schlink (an experienced string teacher and devotee of Scottish fiddle music!). New players are always welcome - the main group meets at 3pm.
The next session for Juniors will be Sunday July 29th at 2pm; each session costs $7.00.
Further details about the group may be found at www.perthscottishfiddlers.com.au or by emailing Margaret at mschlink@gmail.com. Please email if you wish to attend so I can have the right amount of music!

REGISTER NOW!
“This orchestra has the potential to effect a phenomenal change in the way that young people in particular view orchestral music” – email from a Gold Coast audience member
DeepBlue is the orchestra unleashed! Combining the traditional string orchestra with digital and electronics, DeepBlue musicians combine movement, live cameras, big screens and dynamic lighting. It is the perfect combination of multimedia, film, music, rock, electronics and classical - the orchestra of the 21st Century! But DeepBlue are not only here to put on the show of a lifetime - we are offering your young musicians an opportunity to perform live on stage!
You might have seen DeepBlue last year on Australias Got Talent. But if you haven’t heard of DeepBlue, don't let the word orchestra trick you.... check us out on the ABC art show to see for yourself what DeepBlue is all about.
DeepBlue have conducted workshops across Australia inspiring thousands of young musicians and we are passionate about encouraging young people to experience a new way of playing music. We are now on the hunt for your young musicians to be part of YoungBlue. On the day of each show DeepBlue provide an opportunity to experience our unique approach to music and performance through an hour-long workshop. Margaret River - Albany - Esperance - Kalgoorlie - Merredin - Tammin - Mandurah - Karratha - Port Hedland - Geraldton - Moora - Bunbury
Check out some of the comments we’ve received from YoungBlue participants and schools on our last tour of Oz:
“The girls were very privileged to be able to take part in such a program as they don’t normally get access to such events. It was exactly the type of experience they needed to get them excited about their string playing and to see that it can be fun! Your show was truly electric – we all left on a high and the girls were still buzzing with enthusiasm the following Monday at school” Debbie Haskell, Killester College ‘11
‘I just wish I was a teenager still, when I was a 'young' musician there was nothing as exciting as 'DeepBlue'. I saw the MSO in the town hall (playing Britten's Young Person's Guide...). I fell in love with the violin, but my impression of musical life was not half as exciting as you present it! Annette Castles - Classroom Music Gippsland Grammar '11

Allegri Chamber Orchestra’s Easter Celebration The Allegri Chamber Orchestra’s first concert programme for this year has been chosen to be appropriate to the Easter season. The Cantata ‘Ich habe genug’ portrays the acceptance of death and the hope of new life that is found in so many of the works by the devout Johann Sebastian Bach. The soloist in both the cantata and the aria ‘Erbarme dich’ from the St Matthew Passion is mezzosoprano Donna Stone-Friedl. Allegri’s Artistic Director Jacek Slawomirski plays the exquisite solo violin part in the latter work.
Noel Nouvelet ,`The Green Blade Ariseth’ also expresses the optimism of new life. Perth composer Jeff Carroll wrote the work for Allegri violinist Richard Isted, who is the soloist in this first performance.
The concert opens with Purcell’s Pavane and Chaconne and includes an arrangement of the Sinfonia from Bach’s Cantata 156.
The performance starts at 3 pm on Sunday in the Sacred Heart Chapel, Mary Street, Highgate. There is ample parking for the Chapel off Harold Street.
Tickets are available at the door or through BOCS Ticketing 9484 1133.
